Pianist Oni Buchanan presents ‘Looking Glass Music’ in BF

Thursday February 28, 2013

BELLOWS FALLS -- On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Stone Church Arts presents pianist Oni Buchanan performing a program she calls "Looking Glass Music: Reflection & Resonance," at Immanuel Episcopal Church, 20 Church St.

Buchanan’s "Looking Glass Music: Reflection & Resonance" program gathers together a diverse group of fantastical piano works that create their own landscapes through reflection and resonance, exploring the piano’s vast range of sound.

Opening with a selection of etudes from the haunting and heart-stopping Rachmaninoff "Etudes-Tableaux," the program detours into the enchanting, oriental landscapes of sound in Debussy’s "Pour les Quartes," the impetuous, mercurial bursts of witty aphorism in "Pour les Degrés chromatiques" and the extroverted exuberance and pointillistic splendor of "Pour les Octaves."

The centerpiece of the program, Cindy Cox’s "Hierosgamos," casts a commentary back on the Rachmaninoff and Debussy works, and transforms the Ravel "Miroirs" suite, which will follow. Cox’s "Seven Studies in Harmony and Resonance" seem to occur on the brink of evolution -- at the microscopic level of cell differentiation -- at the same time as they draw from the most ancient well of melody and shared memory. The program culminates in Ravel’s "Miroirs," with its virtuosic landscapes of moths, birds and bells, roiling oceanic waves and the acrobatics of a court jester.

Admission is $17 for adults ($13 for seniors and children under 12) in advance and $20 ($15) at the door.

Tickets are available at Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls, Toadstool Bookshop in Keene, N.H., Brattleboro Books, Misty Valley Books in Chester, www.brattleborotix.com or at the door.
