Plea deal filed in Vermont niece killing

BURLINGTON (AP) - A plea deal has been filed that would spare a Vermont man from the death penalty in exchange for pleading guilty to abducting and killing his 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett in 2008.

According to reports, the agreement filed in federal court on Friday calls for 47-year-old Michael Jacques to serve life in prison.

The former East Randolph man is expected to plead guilty on Aug. 27.

Last week federal prosecutors announced they would drop their plan to seek the death penalty in exchange for Jacques agreeing to plead guilty to all the charges and serving life in prison with no possibility of parole.
