Police arrest suspect of gas station robbery
BRATTLEBORO -- The suspect in the Shell Gas station robbery that occurred Monday night was arrested in a parking lot of a local motel in Brattleboro Tuesday afternoon.
The Canal Street gas station was robbed Monday night at 10:35 p.m. According to police, the suspect reached over the counter and grabbed money out of the register before running from the store. No weapons were displayed.
Images of the alleged robber were distributed to the local media Tuesday morning. Soon after, the Brattleboro Police Department started receiving tips on a possible identification of the robber. Based on those tips, police identified the robber as Robert P Johnston, 27, of Rutland, who was believed to be staying in a hotel located on Putney Road.
Detective Jonathan Griffus, assisted by members of the Patrol Division, went to the hotel and located Johnston in the parking lot, where he was arrested without incident. It was also learned Johnston had an outstanding warrant out of Rutland.
Johnston was brought back to the Brattleboro Police Department for processing.
The BPD extended its gratitude to all members of the community for their assistance in the apprehension of this suspect.
