Police: Lawmaker hit by car and killed

WALTHAM (AP) - Vermont State Police say a 65-year-old state lawmaker from Vergennes was killed when he was hit by a car along U.S. Route 7 in the town of Waltham.

Police say Greg Clark was driving south at about 7:30 a.m. Friday when he stopped his car at the edge of the highway to clear his windshield. Clark pulled partially onto the shoulder of the road, but he was hit by another south-bound vehicle while he was outside his car.

Another motorist who had stopped and urged Clark to get out of the road, suffered minor injuries.

Clarke, a Republican, was just elected to his sixth term in the Legislature.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says he was deeply saddened to hear of Clark's death and his heart goes out to Clark's family.
