-- A teenager distracted by a cellphone while driving avoided serious injury on Friday afternoon when she was involved in a crash on Interstate 91 near Exit 3.

According to police, Chloe Walier, 19, of Brattleboro, was travelling north on I-91 at about 3:45 p.m. when she "took her eyes off the road to check her cell phone. When she refocused on the road and the flow of traffic," Walier said that a 2009 Chevy 2500 driven by Russell Dorson, 45, of Belmont, N.H., had slowed down to exit the highway.

Walier was unable to stop her 2004 Chevy Cavalier in time, striking the rear of Dorson's vehicle. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and neither was injured, nor was a passenger who was asleep at the time of the collision. It was unclear in which vehicle the passenger was traveling.

Each vehicle sustained moderate damage and had to be towed from the scene.

--On Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m., Brattleboro Police responded to the Hannaford Grocery Store on Putney Road for the report of shoplifting. Following an investigation, John M. Butler, 49, of Brattleboro was issued a citation for stealing a bottle of wine.


-- On Aug. 30, the Vermont State Police clocked a vehicle at 90 mph at mile marker 6 in the northbound lane. During the stop, the driver, Matthew Manzella, 24, of Bellmore, N.Y., admitted there was marijuana in his vehicle. Troopers seized approximately 10 grams of marijuana. Manzella was issued a citation for marijuana possession and ordered to appear in court on Oct. 9.


-- On Sept. 4 at approximately 8 p.m., the Vermont State Police responded to South Road for the report of a single-vehicle accident. Troopers learned that the driver, Travis Hardgrove, 16, of West Halifax, was negotiating a sharp corner when he lost control and went off the road, hitting a tree. Wet road conditions and loose gravel contributed to the crash. Though Hardgrove was wearing a seatbelt, he suffered minor facial injuries from the airbag.


-- On Aug. 29 at just before 11 p.m., the Vermont State Police responded to Route 5 at East Town Farm Road for the report of a single-vehicle accident. Troopers determined that the driver, Stephanie G. Dossantos, 26, of Leominster, Mass., was driving under the influence of alcohol. She was held until sober and ordered to appear in court on Sept. 8. Neither Dossantos nor her two passengers were injured in the crash. Rescue Inc. and the Putney Fire Department assisted.


-- The Vermont State Police is investigating the theft of approximately 150 gallons of fuel from a piece of machinery located at the gravel pit on Brockway Mills Road. Anyone with information is urged to call Trooper Brian Berry at 802-875-2112.


-- On Aug.31 at approximately noon, the Vermont State Police responded to the report of a two-vehicle accident on Route 5. Following an investigation, troopers determined Nathan Wheeler, 24, of Springfield, was stopped waiting to make a left turn when he was hit from behind by a vehicle being driven by Corey Field, 75, of Walpole, N.H. One passenger and three children in Wheeler's vehicle were transported to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, N.H., and were treated for whiplash. Field sustained a laceration to her lower lip but refused medical treatment. She was issued a civil violation for following too close.


-- On Aug. 30, Vermont State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 9. According to police, Tammy Peters, 38, of Woodford, was pulling out of a driveway when Daniel Sherman, 26, of Dummerston, came over the crest of a hill and struck Peters' vehicle. The front of Sherman's vehicle struck the left side a a trailer that Peters was towing, causing minor damage. There were no injuries.
