-- On Dec. 5, Brattleboro Police responded to the parking lot at the Price Chopper store on Canal Street to investigate a report of a motor vehicle crash. Following that investigation, Alyssa-Ann M. Hamel, 18, of Brattleboro, was arrested for committing an act of operating without owner’s consent.

-- On Jan. 1, Vermont State Police were notified of a two-car crash on I-91 southbound at the Exit 2 on-ramp, where one vehicle did not stop. Investigation revealed that Dennis W. Zoufaly, 52, of Madison, Conn., was trying to merge into traffic when a white truck pulling an enclosed snowmobile trailer entered the merging lane and struck his vehicle, a 2012 Ford Excursion. A second call regarding this crash was made and an uninvolved third party advised that the truck had gotten off at Exit 1 and was at the Burger King, inspecting the damage to the trailer. Police are asking that this individual, or anyone else that may have seen this crash or have any information regarding it, contact Senior Trooper Genevra Cushman at 802-254-2382.


-- On Dec. 22, Vermont State Police responded to the Rodeway Inn on Route 5 for a report of someone kicking on a door. Investigation revealed that an unknown male had tried kicking in the door to a room of the motel, causing damage to the door. In the room was Harley Giddings, Tonya Chartier, and their three young children ages 6 months, 1 year and 6 years. Further investigation and viewing of security footage revealed that the male now identified as John Cotter, 55, of Charlestown, N.H., also had a weapon in his hand. The weapon appears to be a pipe of some kind.

Cotter and others fled from the scene, in two separate vehicles, prior to the police arriving on scene, although he was identified within 24 hours from the video. On Jan. 4, Cotter was taken into custody by the New Hampshire State Police in the town of Claremont, on an extraditable warrant. Cotter is facing charges of attempted burglary into an occupied dwelling, unlawful mischief and numerous counts of simple assault.

On Jan. 8, the other parties involved have been identified from the above listed incident after an investigation. They are Michael Cotter, 22, of Charlestown, N.H., Bernice Pleisch, 41, of Charlestown, N.H., and Shawn Lafayette, 21, of Charlestown, N.H. Michael is being charged with accessory before the fact and violation of conditions. Pleisch is being charged with accessory aiding in commission of a felony and Lafayette is being charged with accessory before the fact. All were cited to appear in Windham County Superior Court Criminal Division on Feb. 26.


-- On Jan. 3, a catalytic converter and exhaust system was removed from a 2006 Ford Escape, while it was parked in a pull-off at the end of Back Westminster Road. Anyone with information regarding this theft is asked to call the Vermont State Police in Rockingham at 802-875-2112.

-- On Jan. 4, Vermont State Police investigated a two-car motor vehicle crash on Route 5 in front of Allen Brothers. William Gembarowski, 63, of Brattleboro, was traveling north in a 2001 Chevy Silverado and failed to yield while turning left into Allen Brothers. Lois Butler, 65, of Putney, was traveling south in a 2002 Toyota Rav4 and collided with the passenger side of Gembarowski’s truck. No one was injured. State Police were assisted by Golden Cross Ambulance and the Westminster Fire Department.
