Police search for suspects in thefts and vandalism
CHESTERFIELD, N.H. -- Police in New Hampshire are looking for the thieves and vandals responsible for the series of crimes committed along Route 63 and Route 9 over the past few days.
Chesterfield Police Lt. Duane Chickering said several unlocked vehicles were broken into along Linfield Lane and South Shore Road between 9 p.m. on Sept. 20, and 6 a.m. the next day.
At least eight vehicles were broken into and approximately $800 worth of cash and items were stolen.
Chickering said the thieves appeared to be selective in what they stole, often leaving larger, bulkier items of value, like golf clubs, alone and taking wallets, cash, change, alcohol, knives and small electronics.
Evidence showed a track of foot prints leaving several of the crime scenes and some people reported seeing headlights from a vehicle entering and leaving some of the areas that night.
"We believe at this time a vehicle was involved and it appears that at least more than one person was involved in the series of crimes," Chickering told the Reformer. "We continue to encourage all residents to lock their vehicles, even when they are parked in their driveways."
A resident reported seeing someone with a flashlight at about 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, but when members of the Chesterfield and Hinsdale Police Departments arrived the person was no where to be seen.
During that same time, someone sprayed light blue graffiti over one of the box trucks at Chesterfield Tire along Brook Street.
Chickering said there’s no proof to suggest the two incidents are connected but it’s certainly a possibility.
Also near the same time as the thefts and vandalism a resident reported that someone had put some chemical in their car’s gas tank causing the vehicle’s engine to jerk and eventually stop working.
When mechanics examined the engine the substance was located and brought to the crime lab for analysis.
Lt. Chickering is asking anyone with additional information or any additional victims to contact him at 603-363-4233 ext. 62.
