Police: Sugarers should lock up maple syrup

CRAFTSBURY, VT. >> Vermont State Police are suggesting maple producers lock up their syrup after two recent thefts worth thousands of dollars.

Marvin Ryan of Ryan Brothers Farm in Craftsbury suspects thieves broke into his sugarhouse and stole about a third of his syrup worth between $2,500 and $3,000. He discovered the loss on Monday.

Sgt. Lyle Decker tells WCAX-TV that it looked like the thieves spilled a lot of the syrup when they were dumping it out of the barrels.

Last month, more than 63 gallons of maple syrup were stolen from a farm stand in Dummerston.
