Post 5 denies Hartford
BRATTLEBORO -- A four-run cushion the Brattleboro American Legion Post 5 baseball team developed in the third inning gave pitcher Jimmy Mills the footing he needed to buckle down and propel his squad to a 7-1 win over Hartford on Thursday.
Mills walked three and surrendered three hits in the front two innings while giving up his only run of the game before gaining his composure and leading Brattleboro to a 4-1 record.
"Today the mound was a little soft and that affected my release point a little bit," he said in the dugout after the game. "As the game moved on I was able to adjust my release point. Š (My teammates) hit the ball really hard today and gave me a lot of help. Once they gave us the lead, I settled down."
Mills walked five and fanned four.
Post 5, which recorded eight hits, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Jeff Kerylow singled to start and moved to second when Hunter Smith walked and lead-off man Chris Lasch beat out a throw to first on a bunt to load the bases. Cam Wright then punched a single to left to bring home Kerylow and Smith and give his team the lead. Wright crossed the plate when Kassidi Ramirez laced a double and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Chris McAuliffe then made it 5-1 by driving in Ramirez with a single.
In the fifth inning, Ryan McAuliffe reached base on a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Michael Rooney after getting to second base. Rooney then came around to score to make it 6-1. Ramirez scored again in the sixth, bringing the final score to 7-1.
Post 5 (4-1) is scheduled to visit Hartford for a nine-inning game starting at noon on Saturday.
