President of Southern Vermont College leaving


BENNINGTON (AP) - The president of Southern Vermont College says she's stepping down after eight years to work at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington.

Karen Gross is stepping down as of Oct. 1. She had spent 2012 working at the department as a senior policy adviser.

The Board of Trustees will announce a search firm and search committee within the next month. A new president is expected to be named this fall.

Over the past eight years, the college expanded enrollment, improved retention and increased diversity. It has introduced new and expanded its existing healthcare programs that include nursing, radiologic sciences and healthcare management.

Southern Vermont College is a liberal arts college in Bennington with about 500 students.
