Purple Gang, BF stickers play Saturday
The Purple Gang, which picked off star quarterback Griff Stalcup twice and stunned BBA 20-14 in the 2016 title tilt, will visit Manchester for a 1 p.m. Division 2 semifinal showdown with the No. 1 Bulldogs.
Burr and Burton (8-1) got revenge during the 2017 regular season, routing the Terriers 23-6 in Week 3. Signal caller Jay McCoy ran for 170 yards and threw for 127 more to lead the way.
Bellows Falls (7-2) has talented QB Logan Cota and dangerous running back Shane Clark on its side. Cota threw for 134 yards and Clark ran for 211 yards in last week's 61-21 victory over Lyndon in a first-round contest.
The Bulldogs registered nine sacks during their 48-7 romp of No. 8 North Country. Logan Morgan and McCoy finished with 141 and 142 yards on the ground respectively to pace Burr and Burton.
The BF stickers (16-0) will put their 39-game winning streak on the line when facing second-seeded Spaulding (14-1) in Saturday's Division 2 state championship field hockey game at UVM in Burlington at noon.
Bellows Falls, which is going for its third crown in a row, has defeated Middlebury 6-0 and BBA 3-0 in the first two rounds of the 2017 tournament. Abbe Cravinho has racked up two goals and four assists during the playoffs, while Dani Marchica has three postseason tallies to give her a team-best 28 for the year.
"I think we're a little faster than they are," said BF coach Bethany Coursen, who had watched Spaulding win its semifinal matchup against Mount Abe, 2-1.
Makayla Boisvert and Alison Ahearn did the scoring for the Crimson Tide, with helpers coming from Morgan Mast and Anna Clark-Blouin. Ahearn also had a hat trick when Spaulding beat Brattleboro in a quarterfinal.
