TOWNSHEND — The Leland & Gray varsity girls soccer team beat Bellows Falls in its final regular season game 5-1 on Tuesday.

The Rebels were hosting their Senior Night, honoring 12th graders Kelsi Bostrom, Mariah Hazard, Rebecca Winot and Hannah Petronic.

The five goals from the home team came from Bates and Petronic. Bates had a hat trick, while Petronic scored two goals in her final regular season game as a Rebel.

Petronic was glowing after the victory, saying "I'm so happy. I can't even describe how I feel."

The senior forward's goals came off of assists from Bates and Maris Linder. Bates fed the ball to Petronic for a score with just 53 seconds remaining in the first half. At the 15:24 mark in the second half, Linder put the ball through for Petronic, who touched it past the keeper.

At this point in the season, Bates scoring in a match is virtually expected. On Tuesday, she exceeded expectations.

The skilled star played midfield, involving herself in four out of the five goals for the Rebels.

Bates beat goalkeeper Shanice Fischer less than five minutes into the bout, and scored again just two minutes later. Her third goal was on a penalty kick early in the second half, earned by Ellie Longo after a collision with Fischer in the box. The foul resulted in a red card for the keeper.

Layla Maiocco scored the lone goal for the visitors with 13:29 left in the first half of play. Maiocco struck the ball into the top right of the net past senior keeper Kelsi Bostrom.

The Rebel ladies hope to carry their momentum into playoffs. Senior captain Hannah Petronic believes her team has potential in the upcoming state tournament, saying, "If we keep playing the way we have been and keep up our intensity, we can go far."

The Rebels finish the fall season with a winning record of 7-6, securing the eighth seed in the tournament.

Leland & Gray's playoff matchup will be in Townshend versus 9th seeded Windsor on a later determined date.

The Terriers end with a 1-12 record, holding the 16th seed. They will have to match up with top seeded Thetford in their playoff bout.
