Rebels roll to 19-4 victory over Arlington

TOWNSHEND — The black flies that were invading everyone's personal space on Tuesday afternoon at Leland & Gray were the least of Maggie Murphy's worries.

Arlington's pitcher had to deal with a lineup that's dangerous from top to bottom.

The host Rebels racked up 21 hits, including at least one from every starter, during their 19-4 victory over the Eagles in a game that was stopped in the bottom of the sixth.

"We started pretty slow. It took us time to get used to the slower pitching," said Leland & Gray leadoff hitter Jessie Stockwell. "Our whole lineup is really strong."

The Rebels (5-1) fell behind 2-1, but put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to take the lead for good. Jordan Gouger and Jessica Madore each singled during the surge, with the biggest blow being Gabby Donna's two-run blast over the fence in center field.

"It took us about four innings to adjust our timing. We had to be patient up there," noted Leland & Gray coach Tammy Claussen. "It might have been because we're not used to having Olivia Brown pitching for us, but my players acted tight in the beginning."

Mackenzie Boyle had a pair of doubles in the fifth inning as the Rebels sent 14 batters to the plate and tacked on 10 more runs. Rachel Borgesen, Caroline Tietz, Jordan Gouger and Brown also doubled during the rally.

After the visiting Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, the home team scored five times in the bottom half of the inning to end it. Arlington relief pitcher Michelle O'Shea, who was also seen swatting away flies while inside the circle, gave up extra-base hits to Sarah Anderson and Boyle. Anderson dumped one into right field against a shift that had all three Arlington outfielders positioned from center to left and Boyle's two-run double gave the Rebels a mercy-rule victory.

Brown, who was making her first varsity start, fanned seven, walked three and gave up just two hits to earn the win. Madore (2B) finished with four assists and a catch, while Borgesen (3B) made a heads-up play in the third inning when she fielded a ground ball and got lead runner Maria Duffanny out at third.
