Rebels softball team improves to 10-2

TOWNSHEND — On a day when Burr and Burton coach Julie Fifield was concerned with the relentless black flies, it was routine flies that were bothering Leland & Gray skipper Tammy Claussen.

The Rebels flew out a dozen times and managed just four hits in an 8-2 varsity softball victory over the visiting Bulldogs on Tuesday.

"We came out a little flat offensively," said Claussen. "Not to make excuses, but I just think the girls are tired. They had prom, their senior class trip, and just had a game yesterday. They just weren't as focused as they needed to be."

With the score deadlocked at 2-2, the hosts put up a couple of runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth to pull away. BBA committed five errors in those two innings, while Mackenzie Boyle's sacrifice fly and Rachel Borgesen's RBI single to left were the biggest blows.

Visiting players were asking parents for bug spray and fielders were seen swatting black flies with their hands in the early going. As Fifield crouched behind the plate to warm up BBA pitcher Jenny Kiernan, she let the umpire know that it seemed to be the worst area regarding the pests.

"No, these bugs are everywhere," responded the man wearing a chest protector and mask.

The Bulldogs stole a 1-0 lead in the second, thanks to singles by Kiernan, Matea Cusack and Azurah Booth-Gage (RBI). The Rebels answered immediately, however, as Mariah Hazard tripled in the bottom half of the inning and went home on a throwing error.

Leland & Gray went up 2-1 after back-to-back doubles by Sarah Andersen and Jessie Stockwell in the third frame. Brianna Mayne would then single and eventually score on an error to pull the visitors even at 2-2.

Claussen was often heard telling her hitters to "hit the ball down and hard." But the Rebels would do that just five times in the entire game, with a player making it safely to first every time.

Anna Osnow (CF) charged a liner by Erin Cutts to make a highlight catch for BBA in the second. Leland & Gray got web gems from Borgesen and Andersen, with the third baseman making a nice play on a bunt by Kaitlyn North and the shortstop sprinting behind third base to run down a fly ball by Cusack.

Olivia Brown went the distance for the victory. She struck out 10, walked just one and gave up four hits.

"I thought Olivia did a great job. She controlled each of their hitters," noted coach Claussen, whose team was coming off of a 38-5 rout of Twin Valley. Andersen, Stockwell, Brown, Densmore and Boyle all had at least three hits in that game.

The Rebels (10-2) will play at Black River on Friday. Burr and Burton dropped to 3-8.
