River Gallery School announces new classes and workshops
River Gallery School located at 32 Main St., Suite 201, Brattleboro offers the following classes and workshops starting in June
Scratchboard with Ross Smart on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Explore this illustrative technique in which sharp tools are used to etch into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with black India ink. Scratchboard can be used to yield highly detailed, precise and evenly textured artwork.
Sequencing with Lydia Thomson on Sunday, June 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. A way for both beginners and more experienced art makers to enter the process of oil painting at a deep and direct level. It's a visceral and satisfying approach to art making - using our hands and our senses, we allow the magic to happen.
Making Paint from Scratch with Lauren Watrous on Sunday, June 12 or July 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. We will make simple versions of our own oil, acrylic, watercolor, tempera, gouache, and distemper paints from pigments and paint mediums. Using basic recipes, we will learn to customize paint consistencies and create pigment from plant, metal and stone. This workshop is open to all levels of adult student; it can be an introduction into painting or addition to a lifelong practice.
Possibilities in Printmaking with Helen Schmidt on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 11, 18, 25, and June 1. A wonderful exploration for beginner and advanced printmakers alike. Have fun discovering the many possibilities inherent in relief, drypoint and collograph printing. Create relief prints with bold color by carving into wood or golden linoleum; explore the delicacy of line with drypoint in copper or plexiglass; and build collograph plates to create subtle and layered imagery. Non-toxic inks and materials will be used.
Adult Studio. Choose four or eight classes from the following options: Tuesday, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 5, 12, 19, and 26 with Helen Schmidt; Wednesday 6 to 8 p.m, July 6, 13, 20, and 27 with Lauren Watrous; Thursday, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., July 7,14, 21 and 28 with Lauren Watrous.
Studio class focuses on individual process, creativity and expression, employing a variety of media and techniques, including oils, acrylics, pastel, charcoal, watercolor and Sequencing. Projects are developed individually with instructors. Materials are provided. Open to ALL levels of experience.
Plein Air Landscape with Helen Schmidt on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from noon to 3 p.m. , June 7, 8 and 9. Come make art at the Hilltop Montessori campus,in the hills of Brattleboro. You will be in the midst of inspiring possibilities for your paintings,including a pond, rolling hills, buildings, and fields. Artists can choose to work in either pastels or oils, with one-on-one instruction to help you progress and open work time. There are indoor spaces to work in case of rain. Materials provided, but bring your own easel if you have one you like to use.
Summer ART CAMP
For children Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. Your child can enjoy a week of drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, and more. Snacks will be provided to nourish the young artist and keep the creativity flowing. Sessions begin the week of June 27 to July 1 through the week of Aug. 8 to 12.
