Rockingham School Board looking to fill vacancy

Wednesday March 27, 2013

ROCKINGHAM -- The town's School Board is seeking candidates to appoint to a seat left empty when no candidate ran to fill it at Town Meeting Day.

Joe Brissette did not seek re-election to his two-year position and when that slot on the ballot remained nameless it left a void on the board, as no one mounted a victorious write-in campaign.

The School Board now needs to fill vacancy and asks anyone interested in taking over the term through February 2014 to send a letter of interest to Chairman James McAuliffe at the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union office, 25 Cherry St. in Bellows Falls.

Chad Illingworth and Tim Doherty decided in January to leave their seats and the board appointed Rick Holloway to fill in for one of them until earlier this month. Holloway then had to run for re-election, which he won in an uncontested race. Tom Brennan also secured a one-year seat in an uncontested race, taking over the other position left by Illingworth and Doherty, who was appointed in 2012 when no one was on the ballot for a two-year seat on the board. McAuliffe also won a three-year position and Bill Metcalfe is the other member of the current board.

Whoever is appointed will be the fifth person on the five-member board. He or she will have to run for re-election at Town Meeting in 2014 if they are interested in remaining on the board.

Holloway, a Saxtons River resident, was appointed to add a fourth member to the board after Illingworth and Doherty submitted letters of resignation. McAuliffe previously told the Reformer it was important to get a new member as soon as possible because three must be present in order to hold a meeting.

McAuliffe said having only three members on a normally five-member board can be problematic. But having a fourth member means meetings can still be held even if one person is unable to attend.

Holloway said he was on the team that designed the renovation of the Bellows Falls Middle School and had some people suggest he run for the school board some day. When he heard about the two open positions, he thought the timing was right.

"I have a son in the second grade (at Saxtons River Elementary School) and I'm just interested in seeing what I can do to help the school system here," he said in January.

The Rockingham School District includes Saxtons River Elementary School, Central Elementary and Bellows Falls Middle School.
