Rookie from Vernon earns top hoops nod
BRATTLEBORO -- Vernon resident and hoopster Mary Richardson has been named the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week at Johnson State College.
Richardson averaged 21.5 points and six rebounds per contest in an 0-2 week for the Lady Badgers while also shooting 77% (10-13) from the free throw line in the set of games.
Richardson, a health science major, scored 22 points and had six boards in a 79-62 home loss to SUNY Canton on Nov. 20. She followed that up with a 21-point, six-rebound outing in a 68-41 road loss at Norwich on Sunday.
The 5’5" guard is currently leading Johnson in scoring (18.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg) while also averaging two steals and one assist per game. Richardson has also been strong at the charity stripe where she is currently shooting 80%.
Richardson helped Johnson to a split at the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament on the opening weekend of the season by averaging 15 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, and one steal per game and being named to the All-Tournament Team.
A 2011 BUHS graduate, Richardson was a Marble Valley League all-star, and was the first pick for the A Division and the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association tournament teams.
Richardson and the Badgers fell in the opener to Fitchburg State 89-57 and then rolled by Southern Vermont College 72-52 in the consolation game.
"During our opening weekend at Curry for our first game against Fitchburg State I think we could have played a whole lot better," said Richardson. "I think if we keep up our good defense and good offense then the 12-13 season can definitely be turned into a winning season! JSC women’s basketball has a team full of hard workers and ladies who are willing to do whatever it takes to win."
