Route 100 culvert work to result in two weekend road closures
WARDSBORO -- Route 100 just south of Wardsboro will be closed for culvert repair, according to the Vermont Department of Transportation. The road is to be closed starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, and work is expected to be done by 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25.
Bridge No. 70 on Route 100 crosses an unnamed brook and is located approximately 7.7 miles south of the intersection of Route 100 and Route 30 in Jamaica. The new bridge will be a precast concrete box culvert and replaces an existing metal pipe arch culvert, which was built in 1957. The current culvert measures 8' 10" wide and is 6' 1" high. The new culvert will be 14' wide and 8' high. The roadway over the culvert will measure 28 feet, which includes two three-foot shoulders.
According to the Vermont Department of Transportation, the new culvert nearly doubles the size of the water way and should prevent the road from being overtopped during a 100-year-storm event.
The culvert replacement is timed to coincide with a paving project along Route 100 in Wardsboro that includes 11 miles of resurfacing, pavement markings, guardrail and drainage work.
Replacement of the culvert known as Bridge No. 73 is also scheduled prior to the paving project on Route 100. Bridge No. 73 is about 5.6 miles south of the intersection of Route 100 and route 30. Closure of Route 100 for replacement of the culvert starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, and ends at 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8.
The recommended route during installation of the culvert is Route 30 in Jamaica, continuing to the intersection of Route 9 West in Brattleboro. Take Route 9 to Wilmington to reach Route 100. From Wilmington, reverse the directions. The local detour is to take Podunk Road to Smead Road.
Also starting next week is bridge work on Route 100 in Wilmington. The projects include Bridges No. 34 and No. 35 and some lane closures are possible. On Route 100, about two miles south of the intersection with Route 9, a bridge that was replaced will have a little more work done it.
There will also be paving on Route 100 between Whitingham and Wilmington, beginning at mile marker 8.1 and ending at mile marker 2.4.
