’Searching for Truth’ is Rev. Hansson’s topic on Sunday at All Souls Church
WEST BRATTLEBORO -- All Souls Church Unitarian Universalist invites all to worship on Sunday May 5, at 10 a.m. "Searching for Truth" is the Rev. Barbro Hansson’s topic at All Souls Church.
One of the principles of Unitarian Universalism affirms and promotes "a free and responsible search for truth and meaning." While the idea of meaning might seem simple and clear, truth is a different matter and brings with it many questions, such as "What is truth? How is it defined? Is truth objective or subjective? Is there such a thing as Absolute Truth?" A quote often attributed to the 18th century Scottish philosopher David Hume states that "The truth springs from arguments among friends." If that is true, what does it mean as we journey through life in search of what is true? Can truth ever be simple, clear, understood and fully known?
The All Souls Adult Choir, under the direction of Ede Thomas, will sing "With a Voice of Singing" by Martin Shaw. Join us on Sunday at All Souls Church. The children will hear a story which connects Henry David Thoreau seeking stillness at Walden Pond with the biblical story of Elijah finding God in the "still, small voice." They will talk about air power as power that comes from stillness and listening, and discuss how sometimes very small things we do can have a big impact. The children will experience a meditation which focuses on breath and they will create symbols or air power to hang on the four elements poster.
