Rudyard Kipling awards to be announced June 4


BRATTLEBORO >> The Landmark Trust USA, judges and students who participated in the Rudyard Kipling Young Writers competition will meet at the Latchis Theatre on June 4 at 3 p.m. to hear who won the awards.

The competition was open to all elementary school children in Windham County, fourth to sixth graders, whether in public or private schools or home-schooled. There were three categories to this award: poetry, narrative non-fiction and narrative fiction.

In total the entries included 67 in fiction, 14 poems and eight nonfiction. The schools participating included Academy, Green Street, Dover Elementary, Dummerston Elementary, Guilford Central School, Grammar School and Jamaica Village School.

The panel of judges included: Karen Hesse, an award-winning young adult author who is best known for "Out of the Dust" and "The Music of Dolphins"; Verandah Porche, who has published three books of poetry; Jerry Carbone, former executive director of Brattleboro Memorial Library; and Tim Weed, who teaches at GrubStreet in Boston and in the MFA Creative and Professional Writing program at Western Connecticut State University.
