Saxtons River Pirates split with Barre Braves


SAXTONS RIVER -- On Sunday afternoon, the Saxtons River Pirates and the Barre Braves split a doubleheader in the Green Mountain Baseball League. The Pirates lost the first game 7-5 and won the nightcap 13-7.

The Pirates came back from a 6-2 deficit in Game 2 to tie the score 6-6 after seven innings and won the game in the top of the 10th with a seven-run inning, highlighted by doubles from Scott Renfro and Andrew Robbins, a two-run single by Jeremy Kilburn, and five walks and a hit batsman. Marty Vallender picked up the win by pitching a scoreless 9th and 10th.

Kilburn had three hits, while Renfro, Robbins and Derek Osborne (double, triple) all had two hits to lead the Pirates.

In Game 1, Alex Drost pitched six strong innings, giving up two earned runs. The Pirates got off to a shaky start, making four errors in the first inning. Brian Bashaw had two hits and Chuck Harriman doubled for Saxtons River.

The Pirates are now 1-3 in the Green Mountain League and will host the Connecticut River Ironmen of Norwich in a doubleheader on Sunday, May 25 at noon at Saxtons River.
