School board member proposes unified district under new law

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT. >> A new education law in Vermont has spurred another school board to discuss forming a unified district.

The Valley News reports Hartford School Board member Peter Merrill has proposed forming a district that would extend from Windsor to Thetford under Act 46.

The law provides tax incentives to districts that consolidate with a goal of saving money through efficiencies and providing equal education to students across a district.

Merrill says a district merger in the Upper Valley could save money by reducing staff and closing out-of-date school buildings.

He says a single district could be the answer to concerns that districts surrounding Hartford might choose their merger partners, potentially resulting in a loss of school choice and a loss of revenue from tuition students at Hartford High School.
