Schools prepare for winter sports openers

BRATTLEBORO -- Area high schools are preparing for the 2012-13 winter sports season, and a handful of varsity matchups will take place starting the first full week of December.

The Colonels’ season begins with girls ice hockey, when the purple and white host Burr and Burton on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 4:45 p.m. in Nelson Withington Rink at Living Memorial Park. The ladies are looking to improve upon last year’s 10-7-3 record.

On that same day, the Bellows Falls boys basketball team will travel to Poultney for a 2:30 p.m. tip off, and in ladies’ hoops, the Twin Valley Wildcats will take on Mt. Everett at 6 p.m.

On Monday, Dec. 10, Colonels boys basketball (13-7-0 last year) will host Burr and Burton at 7:30 p.m. for the Brattleboro team’s season opener. Meanwhile, West Rutland will make their way to Townshend to face off against the Rebels, same time.

The Colonel boys hockey team hit the ice for their first time this year to take on Woodstock on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 5:45 p.m., while the Colonel girls ice hockey team hosts Woodstock at 4:30 p.m.
