Sears returns to Cheshire County

SWANZEY, N.H. -- The Sears name is coming back to the Keene area.

Rohit Jacob, the divisional vice president of new store development for Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores Inc., told the Reformer a 9,000-square-foot Sears Hometown store is expected to open in the same complex that houses the Market Basket supermarket on Route 10.

Jacob said the store will sell products that include electronics, appliances, lawn and gardening supplies, tools, fitness equipment and mattresses. He said a soft opening has been scheduled for July 31.

Jacob told the Reformer Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores Inc. is not controlled by Sears Holdings, which sells clothing and apparel. He said most Sears Hometown stores are independently owned and operated by dealers, though the one in Swanzey will be run by the corporate office located in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

A Sears department store in Keene shut down about two years ago and Jacob said Hometown and Outlet Stores Inc., in order to cater to a loyal customer base, typically tries to get into the local market whenever a "big Sears" closes. He said there are roughly 1,200 Sears Hometown stores across the country.
