Season openers continue this week

Reformer Staff

BRATTLEBORO -- Today, the boys lacrosse team, coached by Chris Sawyer, will travel to Rutland for their opener against the Raiders at 4:30 p.m. The Colonels are going for thier third MVL championship in three years. Returning to the attack position are seniors Adam Griffin (out last year) and Jordan Wong. The midfield will be supported by returning group of fierce senior players, and 2nd team all-stater Romello Lindsey returns in the goal.

Also, the girls tennis team, coached by Tom Weber, will host Bellows Falls at 4:30 p.m., in their opener on the BUHS courts. This year's team has fewer beginners this year than any other Weber has coached, but many of the players have been practicing in the off-season as well, which is helpful, according to him. The team also welcomes back some experienced players.

On Thursday, the Brattleboro softball team, coached by Kelly Markol, heads to White River Junction for their 5 p.m. opener versus Hartford. Markol said that right now, she is taking the team through the fundamentals of the game, and she believes that the Colonels will have no problem competing with most teams. The squad's pitcher, Kayla Wood, returns, and when she is throwing well, can tough to hit, noted Markol.

On Saturday, the boys tennis team will journey to start their season on the Rutland clay for a series of matches beginning at 11 a.m. The Colonels should have a solid singles group, according to Duncan, who have come along way, working hard in the off-season. Duncan had taught varsity soccer for about 30 years at Pioneer Valley Regional. Besides coaching, is now teaching 10th grade social studies at BUHS. Duncan replaces Phil Natowich.
