Section of Route 63 closed in Westmoreland

Saturday July 13, 2013

WESTMORELAND, N.H. -- The state hopes a section of Route 63 it closed due to flooding will reopen by the end of next week.

Doug Graham, a district highway maintenance engineer for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, told the Reformer the state has blocked off a roughly two-mile portion of windy road between Partridge Brook and River roads that got washed out during a storm last week. He said the water has since receded but took a 10-by-20-foot chunk out of the roadway.

Graham said the blocked off part of the road is a little bit north of Westmoreland Town Hall, which is located at 780 Route 63.

Signs have been placed around the area to inform drivers and Graham said there is a routed detour that goes along Routes 9 and 12 for all vehicles.

Graham explained the situation occurred because a culvert couldn't handle the volume of water and debris passing through the two-foot pipe that goes underneath the road. This caused water to become backed up and then pour over the road.

Graham said there are both short-term and long-term solutions to the problem. He said his department will first place some rocky, jagged road in to replace the bank underneath the portion of road that got washed out. He said, over time, the retaining wall holding up the road will have to be replaced and the two-foot pipe will need to be bigger to handle more volume.

Some of the signs placed to aid drivers were placed in Chesterfield. But Police Chief Lester Fairbanks said his town was spared any damage from the stormwater.

"We lucked out," he said Friday. "We checked all the roads and we got lucky on this one."
