Senior winter Games return
BRATTLEBORO -- The Vermont Senior Games Association (VSGA) is preparing for another exciting round of senior sports across the state, and the organization is looking for more participants this year to maintain their regular activities schedule, and to perhaps expand on it, in the future.
The VSGA is again offering Nordic and Alpine state championship events.
The Alpine Giant Slalom race will take place Feb. 24, 2013 at Sugarbush Ski Area in Warren, and the Nordic XC 5K Classic and 100 and 200 meter snowshoe races, at a time and date TBA.
These races are open to anyone 50 years of age or older by Dec. 13, 2013. Medals are awarded by gender in five age groups. Last year, the VSGA games were held on the coldest and windiest day all season.
According to the association, the 2012 summer VSGA season has so far produced 167 individual state champions and seven team championships. VSGA claims community interest in the Senior Games increases every year. 2012 was the organization’s best year in terms of participation during the last 29 years it has been in existence. The highest increase in participation came from senior women, who made the jump from 54 gamers in 2011 to 92 in 2012. The organiztion’s goal for the 2013 Games is to have over 500 participants.
VSGA anticipate that many of their champions as well as other qualified games participants will represent the Green Mountain State at the 2013 National Senior Games, to be held in Cleveland, OH, next summer.
