Saturday December 8, 2012

WEST BRATTLEBORO -- Dec. 9 is the Second Sunday of Advent at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 880 Western Ave. in West Brattleboro. The Rev. Joe Amico’s sermon is "Righteous Peace, Godly Glory," based on Baruch 5:1-9 (a book of the Apocrypha, not found in most Protestant Bibles).

The worship service also includes Gathering Music by guitarist Jeff Brewer, and Lighting of the Advent Candle of Peace. Organist William McKim will play the church’s 111-year-old tracker pipe organ. The prelude will be "Overture" from Handel’s Messiah and postlude "Come, Savior of the World" by Manz. Under the direction of Steve Rice, the Senior Choir will sing the familiar round, "Dona Nobis Pacem" (Give Us Peace). Congregational hymns include "When Peace Like a River," "There’s A Voice in the Wilderness" and "I’ve Got Peace Like a River."

Sunday worship at First Congregational Church is at 10 a.m. There is Sunday school during the worship hour for pre-school through grade 6, and child care for younger children. Following worship there is a Fellowship Hour in the Fireplace Room. For those with disabilities, there is a ramp leading to the sanctuary and fireplace room level, as well as large-print hymnals and bulletins. For a ride to worship call 802-257-4408.
