Shooting suspect charged with Brattleboro drug sales

BRATTLEBORO -- A man accused of attempted murder in a Springfield shooting also is facing felony drug charges in Brattleboro.

Leon Jiggetts, 26, of Newark, N.J., pleaded not guilty on Friday to five counts including sales of heroin and cocaine. Police say each of the drug offenses happened in March in Brattleboro.

Judge Karen Carroll imposed $50,000 bail in the Windham County case.

But Jiggetts also is being held without bail in connection with Wednesday's incident in Springfield, where Vermont State Police say he shot a man as part of a dispute over drug proceeds.

The victim, a Springfield man, suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and reportedly is recovering. Jiggetts has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges; two others also have been charged.

In Windham County, Deputy State's Attorney Steven Brown said he was "not prepared to discuss any connection" between the local charges and the Springfield incident.

Court documents say the drug charges are connected to controlled buys that happened under supervision of the Southern Vermont Drug Task Force.

A task force detective wrote in an affidavit that the probe began "after speaking with a cooperating individual who wished to assist the Vermont Drug Task Force in exchange for consideration on pending charges for sale of cocaine."

Jiggetts at the time was known to police only as "SP" and was staying in an apartment building on South Main Street in Brattleboro, according to an affidavit filed in Windham Superior Court Criminal Division.

Police were told that Jiggetts "frequently travels to the New Jersey area to obtain more heroin and will return to Vermont via the train."

The first controlled buy happened March 5; police said the confidential informant purchased 10 bags of heroin and two bags of crack cocaine.

Also, Jiggetts is accused of selling and possessing 200 milligrams or more of heroin on March 17 in Brattleboro.

Jiggetts was arrested late Wednesday night following the Springfield shooting. Brown said Windham County prosecutors were notified that Jiggetts had been apprehended and prepared to file the drug case on Thursday.
