SIT Graduate Institute plans solar project

BRATTLEBORO — SIT Graduate Institute is looking to set up a solar array.

"The host customer's consumption from the project is projected to be 100 percent of the project's output," stated a document signed by developer Morgan Casella, of Dynamic Organics.

A 150 kilowatt community solar farm is being proposed for land at the Brattleboro school's 1 Kipling Road address. The system would be located on "ground mounted to the west of the Lowey International Center off Dickinson Road on the World Learning Campus," according to an application for a certificate for public good. Approval is required before construction can begin.

The Public Service Board received the application on Aug. 17. The customer name is listed as World Learning Community Solar One, LLC. The installer is Dynamic Organics, a Putney-based company that designs and develops renewable energy projects.

The project will be near a stream and wetland, according to the application. Proper precautions around environmental protection are outlined in the document.

Materials used for building the solar array are "nonhazardous and no potential exists for fluid contamination," the application stated.

"The site is located at the crest of an open field on property owned by the school," the document said in defense of the project's impact on aesthetics. "Tree clearing and land contouring will be minimal and limited to the immediate area. Power optimizers are being used in the electrical design of the system which eliminates the need for heavy grading of the site to develop a flat plane."

The array could have "a visually appealing livestock fence instead of a 7 foot chain-link fence," the document said.
