Skatepark proposal goes before Selectboard Tuesday

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Selectboard will consider a proposal to site a new 6,500-square-foot skatepark at the site of the parking lot at Elm and Flat streets Tuesday night at the board's regular board meeting.

Members of the Recreation and Parks Department Advisory Board, along with members of the Skatepark Site Selection Committee, will be at the meeting to discuss the recommendation of the Recreation and Parks Department Board to site the new skatepark at the Elm Street lot.

The Recreation and Parks Board voted unanimously on June 9 to accept the recommendations of the Skatepark Site Selection Committee.

The Selectboard appointed the Skatepark Site Selection Committee late last year to investigate every private and public property that could potentially be the new location of a 6,500-square-foot skatepark.

The seven-member Skatepark Site Selection Committee held 14 public meetings and worked for six months, considering 41 different locations before determining through a numbered evaluation system that the Elm Street lot would be the best site for a new public skatepark.

Supporters of the skatepark will have to raise the money for the park as the town has made it clear that no public money will be used for the facility.

The Skatepark Site Selection Committee chose Crowell Lot as the second best location for the skatepark, and two additional sites at Living Memorial Park were determined to be the third and fourth best choices.

The Selectboard will have the final say on which location supporters can use to start raising money for the facility.

Brattleboro Skatepark Committee Chairman Jeff Clark said that while he respected and appreciated the work of the Skatepark Site Selection Committee, he thought Crowell Lot was still a better site for the skatepark.

At the June 9 Recreation and Parks Board meeting Clark said skateparks that are located at multi-use locations, such as Crowell Lot, are usually more successful than those that are located off on their own.

Tuesday night's Selectboard meeting starts at 6:15 p.m. and will be held in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center.
