Snow named Windham Regional Career Center's December Student of the Month
BRATTLEBORO — Theresa Snow, a senior from West Dover, has been named the Windham Regional Career Center's December student of the month. She was recommended for this honor by Janna Crafts, who had very positive things to share about Theresa.
"She's the hardest working and most sincere student I've had the pleasure to work with. She always arrives early to class and works without any prodding. She has a full class schedule, volunteers for the West Dover Fire Department, and often has a part-time job."
Crafts further noted Theresa's willingness to help her fellow students.
"I observed her recently encouraging a student to sign up for the Career Center's Emergency Medical Responder course. She spent quite a bit of time with this young man, answering his many questions about the program."
Theresa has been taking Career Center courses since her junior year. During that year, she did solid A work in Medical Human Services, Fire Fighting, Technical Math IV, and Technical and Professional English III. This semester, she's taking Technical and Professional English IV, Career & College Readiness Prep, Emergency Medical Responder, and Medical Terminology. In the spring, she's signed up to take Introduction to Early Childhood Education along with three art courses through Brattleboro Union High School: Photography, Studio Art, and Ceramics.
Theresa will be attending Southern Maine Community College in the fall, where she plans to major in both fire science and paramedicine. Her intent after graduation will be to find full-time work at a fire department. She shared that her primary interest is in firefighting, but that fire departments want their applicants to have training in paramedicine as well.
Theresa has been volunteering with the West Dover Fire Department for just over six years now. She credits one experience in particular with helping to shape her career path. This was back in the fall of 2011, when she participated in the live burn of the Andirons Lodge in West Dover, which was managed by nationally certified fire science instructors.
"I worked closely with the instructors and got to see all the stages of a fire, from ignition to decay, which really interested me. I love helping other people, and this kind of work seems to be a very good way to do that," she said.
Theresa mentioned, as well, that "My father also works for the West Dover Fire Department and I've always looked up to him. From a very young age, I remember wanting to go with him when his pager would go off."
Theresa plans to take college courses in early childhood education as well, since she enjoys working with young children and wants to be sure to have a back-up plan for herself. She hopes to return to the southern Vermont area to pursue her work.
The Windham Regional Career Center provides technical and career training for students from the following high schools: Brattleboro, Leland and Gray, Twin Valley, Bellows Falls, and Hinsdale, N.H.
