Solid seasons for Brattleboro's baseball, softball, LAX teams
BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Union High School varsity baseball, softball, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse teams had a combined 41-26 record this spring and all four of them earned a home playoff game.
The No. 7 BUHS baseball team (11-7) rocked 10th-seeded North Country 9-1 in its Division 1 playdown game, behind pitcher Danny Richardson's complete-game masterpiece. The Colonels then fell to second-ranked CVU 5-3 in the quarterfinals, despite two hits each from Jimmy Mills and Rob Heileman.
Kelly Markol's defending champion softball team went 10-7 after losing superstar hurler Kayla Wood to graduation. The purple and white saved its worst for last, unfortunately, as 13 walks helped 11th-seeded Colchester to a 16-5 upset in Round 1 at Sawyer Field -- in a game that Maddy Derosia had a run-scoring single, a double and an RBI sacrifice fly.
The BUHS boys lacrosse team earned a first-round bye in the Division 1 tournament, before falling to a talented Middlebury team 20-8 in Saturday's quarterfinals. Conner Elliott-Knaggs had a hat trick for the Colonels (12-5) in that finale.
And in Shannon Garrett's first year as coach, the Brattleboro girls lacrosse team went 8-7 overall. It ended with a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to Burlington in a playdown game, which Hannah Lynde and Alex Fellows each scored three goals in.
