Spurlock at Sunday Sounds

BRATTLEBORO — 118 Elliot launched its weekly series of Sunday Sounds after an August hiatus. Participants are invited to engage in quiet contemplation while listening to intentional, one-hour performances by guest "sound artists" on Sundays, from 11 a.m. to noon, at 118 Elliot St. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., and tea is served following the experience. The events are free. Donations are welcome.

Sunday Sounds means to create an inclusive place for the community to gather in a communion of contemplation that transcends religious, philosophical and political differences in the presence of great music and art. Participants often engage in quiet movement such as yoga or stretching. Yoga mats and blankets are provided. The goal is to release people from the churning of their daily lives to share an experience of relaxation and self-reflection.

The series will continue through December. Patrick Spurlock will be this Sunday's performer.

Sunday Sounds will feature a host in a monthly rotation who will either perform or curate those performances. First Sundays (starting Oct. 1), will present Jed Blume and his ethereal raga-based hand pan compositions; Second Sundays, Stephan Brandstatter's sonic massage; Third Sundays, the modulated synthesiser sounds of Patrick Spurlock and Fourth Sundays, John Loggia will mix found sounds with percussion. Months with a fifth Sunday will feature a special guest host to be announced.
