Suspicious apartment fire in Johnson under investigation

JOHNSON, VT. >> Fire officials are investigating a suspicious early morning blaze that broke out at an apartment building in northern Vermont and injured one unidentified tenant.

The Lamoille County Sheriff's Department says the fire started around 1:40 a.m. Monday at a three-unit apartment on Railroad Street in Johnson.

The tenants of the building escaped the blaze successfully, but one person suffered minor injuries while fleeing. The victim was taken to University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

Johnson Fire Chief Arjay West says firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and keep major damage contained to one section of the building. The front end of the property suffered heavy smoke and water damage.

The Vermont State Fire Marshal's Office and state police's arson unit are investigating.
