Suspicious fire damages historic Station Covered Bridge

CORNWALL, VT. >> Vermont State Police and the state Division of Fire Safety are investigating what officials determined was a suspicious fire that seriously damaged a historic covered bridge this weekend.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Station Covered Bridge on the Cornwall-Salisbury town line around 2:50 p.m. Saturday following reports that the span was fully engulfed.

Cornwall Fire Chief Dennis Rheaume says the blaze was most likely arson given that there were no lightning strikes in the area and there is no electricity along the wooden bridge.

Rheaume says flames from the burning single-lane span spread to nearby swamp lands, scorching approximately 15 acres before the blaze was extinguished.

The bridge, which was built in 1865, passes over Otter Creek to connect the two Addison County towns.
