Terrier wrestling team prepare for first tournament

Friday December 7, 2012

Bellows Falls-Hartford High School’s co-op wrestling team enters into its second year together with no where to go but up.

"With the entire team returning along with sone new wrestlers, the future looks bright," said coach Claude Weyant.

The team starts off their season Saturday at home with the annual ConVal Early-Bird Tournament, to be held this year at Bellows Falls Union High School as the gymnasium at ConVal is going through renovation.

Coach Weyant stated that ConVal is the only annual tournament that he has taken his wrestlers to for all his years of coaching. The coach said that a place was needed to host the tournament, so he offered Bellows Falls. "We wanted to keep the ConVal tournament alive and well," he said.

Ten teams from New Hampshire and Vermont will be attending the tournament, which is expected to start around 9:30 a.m.

This is the 17th year that Weyant has been the head coach at BFUHS. Last year the Bellows Falls-Hartford team took 6th place at the state championships with four wrestlers placing in the top four positions in their respective weight class.

Leading the way for the Terriers will be Junior team captain Nolan Viens. Viens has placed second in States for the last two years. He will be wrestling at the 145 pound weight class, and has his eyes set on the championship this time and is working hard to accomplish that task.

Sophomore Steve Cerrone, who placed second in Vermont last year, will be wrestling at the 138 pound weight class.

Sophmore Austin Viens, who placed fourth in Vermont last year, will be wrestling at the 120 pound weight class.

Sophmore Kyle Record, who also placed fourth in Vermont last year, will be wrestling at the 152 pound weight class.

Junior Patrick Libuda, who was injured half way through last season, will be pushing Cerrone at the 138 pound weight class. Other returning wrestlers are Senior Josh Morey, wrestling at the 160 pound weight class, Junior Chris Earle and Sophmore Shane Brown, who will be wrestling at the 195 pound weight class.

The team is rounded off with three newcomers to the program: Freshmen Walkker Scott will be wrestling at the 132 pound weight class, and John Harris will be wrestling at the 220 pound weight class.

The other newcomer is Sophmore Taylor Dressel who will be wrestling at the 113 pound weight class. Dressel is the only girl on the team, and works hard and fits in well with the rest of the wrestlers, noted her coach.
