Terriers trample Rebels on the diamond

WESTMINSTER — An athlete named Brady was hitting his target all day long, despite the rain and cold temperatures, to lead his team to victory on his home field.

Sound familiar?

Brady Illingworth was terrific on Wednesday, striking out 10, walking just one and throwing a two-hitter as the Bellows Falls varsity baseball team trumped visiting Leland & Gray 16-1 in a five-inning affair.

"That's what we're hoping to get from Brady every time he pitches," stated BF skipper Bob Lockerby. "I kept him in there to build up his stamina. He said that he felt good."

Illingworth, who played center for the school's football team that won the Division 2 championship in the fall and is one of five area players on Vermont's Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl squad, gave up a double to Pat McDonald right out of the gate. After the Leland & Gray lead-off hitter scored on a wild pitch, BF's southpaw would throw four consecutive shutout innings.

"They needed to get this first win," said Lockerby, whose team faced dominant pitching in its first two games this season.

Jacob Streeter went 3-for-3, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Terriers offensively.

The hosts sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first to take a 9-1 lead. Leland & Gray starter Luc Dugrenier threw 68 pitches in the marathon inning, allowing five walks and giving up four hits.

Streeter doubled and also had an infield single during the rally. Spencer Clark and Clayton Groenewold each had one hit, and several Terriers advanced a base or two on a wild pitch.

Jake Lober drew a lead-off walk and later scored in the second inning on Clark's ground out to make it 10-1. The Terriers scored five more times in the third frame, highlighted by Brian Green's two-run single to right.

The hosts would end it, via the 15-run rule, by scoring once in the fifth inning. Clark earned a free pass versus reliever Pat McDonald, Shane Healy-Fletcher reached on a Texas Leaguer, and then Streeter launched an RBI double to deep center.

"It's always nice to be on the winning side of these. Personally, I prefer the 4-3 or 2-1 games," commented Lockerby. "I thought we swung the bat well."

Noah Rawling, Groenewold, Green, Clark and Healy-Fletcher all had one hit for the Terriers (1-2). McDonald and Storm Rowe each doubled for the Rebels (0-1).
