The Wondertwins return with hip-hop performance
Brattleboro >> On Saturday at 730 p.m. at the Latchis Theater, The Wondertwins will return to Brattleboro to present The Wondertwins, an exclusive, one-night only performance of "To Hip-Hop, with Love." These hip-hop dancers delivered a jaw dropping performance at this years Southern Vermont Dance Festival. With the technical facility of hip hop, the sophistication of the glory days of the Cotton Club, the flash of Rat Pack era Las Vegas, and elements of vaudeville, robot, tap, and mime, The Wondertwins create a distinctive style all their own. Former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre executive director Judith Jamison has praised The Wondertwins as "absolutely beautiful, strong, powerful, and electric made for Broadway" and Maurice Hines noted that the identical twins "dance in the same spirit as the great brothers of dance before them." and Maurice Hines said the Wondertwins "dance in the same spirit as the great brothers of dance before them."
Billy and Bobby McClain have shared the stage with many Hip Hop legends including Queen Latifah, Bobby Brown (as back up dancers), MC Hammer, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, KRS One and many more! The Wondertwins are celebrating 37 years of professional dance. With the technical facility of hip hop, the sophistication of the glory days of the Cotton Club, the flash of Rat Pack era Las Vegas, and elements of vaudeville, robot, tap, and mime, The Wondertwins create a distinctive style all their own. To Hip-Hop, with Love is made up of three separate pieces: "Broadway to Hip-Hop," "Sounds of Movement," and "L.OV.E." With an eclectic soundtrack of music ranging from legendary rappers Busta Rhymes and KRS One, to the classic voice of Sammy Davis Jr., and even poetry from Maya Angelou, To Hip-Hop, with Love offers a kaleidoscopic view of African-American entertainment traditions.
Today, the award-winning duo street dance pioneers from Boston have headlined at Jacob's Pillow "Unreal Hip Hop" & Inside/Out Dance Festival, Brooklyn Dance Fest, Rochester University, Southern Vermont Dance Festival, Colby College, UraGano Italy, Concepto Vimen Mexico, TedX talks boston, David White's Tap The Yard, DanceNOW Boston, DanceNOW NYCJoes Pub, Dixon Place, The Dance Hall and The Music Hall Loft. They are Six-time winners of Showtime at The Apollo Theater and performed a record 16 appearances on the Apollo Stage. The Wondertwins have also appeared with Maurice Hines' Club Harlem and toured internationally with Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel in the UK, and Purple Rain's Apollonia's Since I Fell For You tour in Singapore. Received the "Pioneers of Dance" award in 2013 by Origination (recent recipients of the award are Complexions Co/founding artistic directors Desmond Richardson & Dwight Rhoden of Complexions, former principal dancer of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Renee Robinson, best selling author/scholar Dr Eric Michael Dyson and Actor Terrance Howard.
Billy & Bobby Mcclain are amazingly talented identical twins from Boston who have spent the majority of their lives living and breathing the world of dance They began their careers at the young age of ten. At 10 years old they won their first dance competition which was judged by the legendary rapper Kurtis Blow. Later that year Billy and Bobby were recruited to join the first professional street dance crew "The Funk Affects". They were already supporting acts behind hip-hop icons Run DMC, KRS One, LL Cool J, EPMD and Slick Rick, they spent seven years with the company gaining recognition by opening up concerts for big names like Run Dmc, LL Cool jay to name a few. In their early teens they were giving monthly hour long shows for the community with opening acts such as new kids on the block who they would later choreograph their Magic Summer Tour and produce songs for their album.
Eight years later, they decided to rebrand themselves as "The Wondertwins" which proved to be a successful undertaking, given the long list of accomplishments that unravelled before them since. Their repertoire includes: — Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre, not just once, but an astonishing six time winners in 1988 — Bobby Brown's UK/USA "Don't Be Cruel" tour in 1989, tour dancers — Good Day New York with hip-hop icon MC Lyte and R&B; legend Regina Bell — Blockbuster film "Purple Rain" co-star APOLLONIA KOTERO's UK tour in 1991, tour dancers — Jerry Lewis's UCP telethon with New Kids on the Block and Mark Wahlberg, 1992 — New Kids On The Block, as the creative team of choreographers behind the 'Magic Summer" tour in 1993 — "Pioneers of Hip-Hop Dance" Award recipients, presented by Yandje Dabinga & Origination at Boston University in 2012 — Maurice Hines JR's sold out shows "Club Harlem" live at the Apollo Theatre, featured dancers, 2014 — NBC NEWS, featured with with Apollo Theatre executive director Mikki Shepard, 2014 — Dance Mogul Magazine, featured in the #1 Urban Dance Magazine, 2014 — The Arts Fuse online magazine, where they were the featured interview by Debra Cash, 2014 — Jacobs Pillow Unreal Hip Hop Dance Festival and Tap the Yard 2, where they are headliners, 2014 Their piece "Broadway to Hip Hop", 2014, has been reviewed several times, and continues to receive more glowing recommendations They have also been Directors of "Project Rise" Summer Enrichment & Performing Arts Camp for 18 years Quite a list, but it doesn't end there! "The Wondertwins" are ready to take their show back on the road with a seven-country tour! They were the first recipients of the Dance Expo's "Hip-Hop Ambassadors" program! Beginning in February 2015 in Riocentre, Brazil & ending in Shanga/Nepali in January 2016. Wondertwins are touring their new production "To Hip Hop, with Love" and has received rave reviews in the Boston Globe and the Boston Banner.
They have worked for 21 years as teachers in Boston Public schools, and spend their summers as directors of Project RISE, an educational summer program for 150 inner-city students in Braintree, Mass. for 20 plus years. They are also award-winning natural bodybuilding competitors and former high school all-star basketball players, highly recruited by many Division I schools but they chose dance.
