Tom Ragle to be guest preacher Sunday at Dummerston Congregational Church

Saturday January 26, 2013

DUMMERSTON -- Tom Ragle will be the guest preacher in Dummerston on Sunday, Jan. 27. His sermon will be "Sainthood." Ragle served as president of Marlboro College from 1958 to 1981. He holds an A.B. in ancient Greek history and literature from Harvard University and a B.A. and M.A. in English language and literature from Oxford University. He serves on the board of Write Action, a nonprofit organization formed to nurture, encourage and promote the literary arts in the larger Brattleboro community, and can occasionally be heard on Brattleboro’s community radio station, WVEW-LP, reading poetry during the Write Action Radio Hour on Sundays.

Ragle is an active member of the Guilford Community Church, UCC, where he has served in many capacities, including as a lay preacher.

The children will focus on the Parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10:25-37. Children begin in worship and then go to an open classroom. In addition to learning the parable through story, drama and art, they will work on service projects for the community.

Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m., the church will offer a program, "Disaster Preparedness for You." Members of the community are invited to learn how to be better prepared personally for what may happen.

Non-perishable foods, toiletries, household items, blankets, tents and tarps for the Drop-In Center may be left in the church entry. A "Dove Board" with needed items for those living with HIV/AIDS is in the church entry. Items may be returned to the "Dove Basket."

A Contemplative Prayer Service is held in the sanctuary each Wednesday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. Dress warmly and share a time of silence and deep peace.

The church is located in Dummerston Center, 1536 Middle Road. Dummerston Congregational Church UCC is a Green Justice Congregation of the United Church of Christ. Because the church is on the top of a mountain, worship and programs are canceled when driving is treacherous. If worship is canceled, all events for that day are canceled. Check for cancellations on WTSA 96.7 FM or 1450 AM or WKVT local news, or contact the church to be added to a calling tree.
