TOWNSHEND -- The Townshend Church will be holding its services at 10 a.m. starting July 6. The Rev. James Scott will be the preacher.

Rev. Scott was born in Philadelphia, attended local schools and graduated from Lincoln University. He pursued theological training at Yale and later earned a Ph.D. at Rutgers University in 1971. Dr. Scott worked for his denomination, American Baptists, and served as pastor of Bethany Church in downtown Newark, N.J., for 37 years. During his tenure as pastor, Bethany grew from a church of about 250 members to more than 2,000 resident congregants. He also taught at Rutgers-Newark for 30 years, and was lecturer at Union Theological Seminary, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and Princeton. He retired in 2000 and now lives in Windham.

The church is a UCC and ABC congregation operating under the guidance of lay members.
