UPDATE: Two die in Marlboro motorcycle crash
MARLBORO -- Two people died as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle crash on Route 9 in Marlboro, Friday afternoon.
Police identified the driver as 73-year-old John Brown, 73, of Clermont, Fl. His passenger was Leona Miller, 72, of Grove City, Fl. The exact causes of death were unknown, pending autopsies.
According to police, a 2011 Can Am Spider (a three-wheeled motorcycle with two front wheels and one rear wheel) was traveling west on Route 9 "when it left the south side of the roadway ... traversed a moderate roadside downgrade ... (and impacted) with several trees."
Miller was ejected into the woods. Brown was able to crawl to the roadside to summon help.
"Passersby stopped to render aid prior to the arrival of emergency services," according to a police report. "Upon the arrival of emergency services the female passenger was found to be lifeless in the woods and was pronouced dead at the scene. The male operator's condition deteriorated rapidly and he died while being transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital."
Two emergency helicopters that were sent to the scene were returned while en route.
The crash transpired in the vicinity of the Marlboro Town Highway Garage, near Town Hill Road.
As of 5:30 p.m., Route 9 was down to one lane, with alternating traffic, as the Vermont State Police investigated the accident.
Police say there was no evidence of intoxication, excessive speed, or that another vehicle was involved.
The State Police, Marlboro Fire/Rescue, Rescue Inc. and the Deerfield Valley Ambulance responded to the scene.
