Vermont Country Store applies for new water well

Posted

ROCKINGHAM -- Members of the public have until Aug. 19 to file with the state any concerns or questions regarding a new public water well proposed by the Vermont Country Store.

Kenneth Yelsey, a hydrogeologist with the Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division in Montpelier, told the Reformer state law requires public notification anytime a new well is proposed by a private establishment or a municipality. He added that though the well may not officially be public, it is classified as such if it serves more than a certain number of people.

Yelsey said the state typically does not receive many comments from people, though some are likely to ask curious questions if the proposed project is expected to have an impact on their property. He said the type of application the Vermont Country Store has filed is pretty routine, as there are more than 1,000 public water systems in the state. He said the Vermont Country Store already has a public water system but plans to put in a new well with the intention of expanding the business in the future.

According to the public notice, a copy of the store's application is available for review at the office of the Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division, at 1 National Life Drive in Montpelier. The division will consider all written comments about the appropriateness of the site for a proposed public water supply well, including requests for a public meeting. Written comments can be sent to Yelsey at the Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division, 1 National Life Building, Main Building Floor 2, Montpelier, VT 05620-3521.
