Vermont lawmakers return to capitol

MONTPELIER >> Vermont lawmakers have opened the second half of their 2015-2016 session, with marijuana legalization, the possible suspension of a senator and closing two budget gaps at the top of the agenda.

Tuesday's business included introduction in the Senate and placement on Wednesday's calendar of a resolution to suspend Sen. Norman McAllister until the criminal sex charges he's facing are heard in court.

In the House, Speaker Shap Smith thanked colleagues for their friendship and support while his wife, Melissa Volansky, battles breast cancer. The speaker said he hopes and expects lawmakers will put politics aside this election year and focus on issues of importance to Vermonters.

Lawmakers then went to their respective committees to focus on issues ranging from budgets to marijuana.
