Vermont learns more about coming federal cuts

MONTPELIER (AP) - The picture is becoming clearer about the impacts of federal budget cuts in Vermont, and it is expected to mean some tough decisions lie ahead.

Analysts for the Legislature and Shumlin administration are projecting the federal cuts will mean $1.25 million in cuts to state programs through the remainder of this fiscal year, according to reports. In fiscal 2014, which starts July 1, lawmakers will have to deal with $9.3 million in federal cuts, and $15 million in cuts are being projected for the following year.

One immediate impact of the automatic federal budget reductions that began taking effect March 1: anyone on extended unemployment benefits will see them shrink by 10.7 percent as of the checks due next Wednesday.
