Vermont man tells police he shot, killed woman

BARTON (AP) - A Vermont man has been charged with first-degree murder after telling police he shot and killed a woman in Barton.

Police in Lyndonville said 76-year-old Carlton Bickford of Glover arrived Friday afternoon. He told them he killed 72-year-old Rachel Coburn.

State troopers found Coburn dead at her home from an apparent gunshot wound. They said the two argued. He left, got a shotgun and shells, and returned. There was another argument before Bickford fired a shot, striking Coburn.

Police said Bickford then attempted to take his own life. He suffered a grazing injury to his shoulder. He drove himself to the Lyndonville Police Department to report what happened.

Bickford is to be arraigned in Orleans County Criminal Court on Monday. It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer.
