Vermont State Police investigating shooting at Guilford home


GUILFORD -- A Wisconsin man remains in critical condition following an early morning shooting in Guilford, Saturday.

Nicolas Baker, 26, of Guilford, is being held at Southeast Correctional Facility in Springfield, on charges of aggravated assault and obstruction of justice. Bail has been set at $25,000.

According to the Vermont State Police, at about 4:20 a.m. on Saturday, the Brattleboro Police Department reported a man had been transported to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital ER with a gunshot wound.

The man was identified as 39-year-old Edward Carter, from Wisconsin. He sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was later airlifted to Dartmouth Medical Center.

Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation D-Troop responded and began an investigation into this incident, according to a report on the incident.

"Investigation revealed that the victim was at the residence of the accused in Guilford, whom he knew," according to the police report. "During early morning hours disagreements and a physical confrontation occurred at the residence. Ultimately a single gunshot injured the victim. He was transported to BMH by two individuals who were there at the residence at the time of these events. The accused was later located at his residence on Stage Road, the location where these events took place."

As part of the subsequent investigation, a search warrant was obtained. As a result, cultivation of marijuana charges with be added at arraignment.

Baker will appear in court at a later date to answer to the charges.
