Vernon woman shines in two distance races


WAITSFIELD -- Dana McClelland, 32, of Vernon, placed 27th overall and was the second female finisher in Sunday's Mad Marathon in a time of 3:36:09.

Brattleboro's Suzanne Bansley finished 77th in 4:10:49. Margo Ghia of Saxtons River wound up 170th in 4:55:54.

Margaret Smith of Maryland was the first female across the line in 3:20:53. Rounding out the top five women were: 2. McClelland, 3:36:09; 3. Cortney Penta, Massachusetts, 3:36:29; 4. Yukiko Oba, Massachusetts, 3:42:57; and 5. Elizabeth Moran, Connecticut, 3:43:25.

In the Mad Half Marathon, Brattleboro's Evan Chadwick was the top local finisher in 1:50:18. Frederick Harlow of Brattleboro placed 68th in 1:53:54, Deena Potter of Brattleboro finished 91st in 1:58:18, and Melanie Boese of Vernon was 184th overall in 2:17:34.

McClelland was fifth overall and the second female finisher in the Catamount Half Marathon on June 29 in Brattleboro in a time of 1:31:13. Japan's Anna Novick was just ahead of her in the fourth position in 1:30:25.

Other area finishers in that race were: Brattleboro's David Hiler was 8th, Newfane's Jeffrey Riley was 9th, Meghan Paugh of Williamsville was 14th, Brattleboro's Evan Chadwick was 20th, Dummerston's Evan Lincoln was 27th, Brattleboro's Danielle Southwell was 29th, Brattleboro's Nelson Bruni was 31st, Brattleboro's Frederick Harlow was 35th, Brattleboro Union High School graduate Ericka Emerson was 43rd, Brattleboro's Jessica Gould was 44th, Brattleboro's John Gurney was 56th, Brattleboro's Nicole James was 57th, Brattleboro's Josh Dillingham was 58th, Vernon's Lois Sparks was 62nd, Vernon's Robert Davis was 63rd, Brattleboro's Ivan Hennessy was 64th, Vernon's Julia Lesure was 70th, Brattleboro's Kate Hayes was 81st, Wilmington's Rachel Rodney was 87th, Brattleboro's Senja Curran was 103rd, Wilmington's Keith Rodney was 112th, Karyn Hammond of Hinsdale NH was 113th, Brattleboro's Rebecca Balint was 114th, Putney's Nancy Gagnon was 126th, Brattleboro's Meghan Cotter was 128th, Brattleboro's Carrie Storm was 131st, Brattleboro's Emily Severance was 140th, Brattleboro's Marissa Baggarly was 141st, Dummerston's Hannah Parker was 144th.
