Wells coming off strong freshman season

BRATTLEBORO >> Sarah Wells, who scored a conference-best 22 points and was named her conference's Rookie of the Week twice as a freshman field hockey player in 2015, will try to help Castleton to victory in Thursday's home opener against Union at 7 p.m.

The Spartans went 4-12 last season, with wins over Rivier, Westfield State, New England College and Saint Joseph's of Maine. They would finish up on a six-game losing streak.

Wells scored a team-high eight goals a year ago and tied for first with teammate Haley Spittle with six assists. She tallied twice against both Rivier and Colby-Sawyer, and delivered the game-winner versus New England College.

The dangerous forward was one of eight Spartans named to the National Academic Squad for achieving a Grade Point Average of 3.30 or higher during her first college semester. And she was one of two Castleton stickers named Scholars of Distinction for a GPA of 3.90 or better.

Wells and the Bellows Falls Union High School varsity field hockey team had a combined 41-10-4 record from 2011-2014. The team went 4-4 in the playoffs in that time, including a 2-1 loss to Stowe in a championship game.

Coached by Bethany Coursen, some of Wells' BF teammates were McKenzie Brandon, Kya Coursen, Molly Dufault, Anna Clark, Cassidy Santorelli, Morgan Finnell and Quinn Lawrence. As a high school senior, Wells went off for 23 goals and 20 assists.
