Westminster Cares

WESTMINSTER -- Westminster Cares honored its 90-plus year-old residents at its annual meeting on Nov. 3 at the Westminster Central Fire Station.

There are currently 21 Westminster people who are 90-plus years old. Ten of them were in attendance for the event. They enjoyed talking with townspeople and also lunch and cupcakes to celebrate their birthdays.

To accompany Pete Harrison’s talk about each 90-plus year old, Don Dawson created a slideshow of photographs from the lives of many of the 90-plus-year-olds. Some were photos of their early years; many were photos of the houses in Westminster where they lived in the past or currently live.

Several townspeople attended including Russ Hodgkins, our new town manager and his wife Elaine. State Senator Jeanette White and State Representative Mike Mrowicki were also in attendance.

The following honored guests were present, from the youngest to the oldest: Phyllis Anderson, Jack Keil, Barbara Keil, Doctor Ralph Buck, Dot Perry, Arlene Reed, Evelyn Rhoades, Everett Reed, Artie Aiken and Dick Morse.

Those unable to attend were: Shirley Kelton, Dennis Payne, Betty Holton, Evelyn Aubuchont, Russell Blodgett, Amelia Zezima, Arlene Bates, Ralph Atkins, Margaret DiFredo, Everett Garland and Louise Morse.

In the list of 21, there are two that are 90, three are 91, six are 92, one is 93, two are 94, one is 95, two are 97, one is 99 and three are 100. Two of the 100-year-olds were present for the celebration. Also included in the mix are two couples.

In addition to the party for the 90-plus year olds, in order to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Westminster Cares, Karen Walter, one of the original founders, gave a wonderful talk accompanied by a slide show, highlighting several activities both past and present.

The slide show contained really nice photos of some of the volunteers who gave their time over the years and helped make Westminster Cares the caring organization it is today.

As in customary during each annual meeting, officers for the coming year were elected. For 2014 the following will serve: Pete Harrison, president; Susan Harlow, co-vice president; Kathy Elliot, co-vice president; Regina Borden, secretary; and Miriam Lanata, treasurer. Connie Sanderson will continue as a board member.

Other board members are Heidi Anderson, Barbara Carey, Don Dawson, and Sally Rhea. Karen Walter and Phyllis Anderson are board members emeritus. President Connie Sanderson thanked outgoing board members Nan Blanchard and Susan Clifford for serving on the board.

Westminster Cares welcomes donations throughout the year from anyone wishing to honor or remember a loved one or friend.
